Description

A flat woven rug, 200cm by 300cm, in jute and cotton. The ground is a plain sand colour and the pattern sits in bands across it: close rows of small geometric figures, carried round the field as a border and repeated in wider bands within it. The weave is flat rather than piled, 1.5cm thick, and both short ends finish in a cut fringe.

At 200 by 300cm this is a room-sized rug. It will take a dining table with enough margin left for the chairs to stay on it when they are pulled out, or sit under the front feet of a sofa and a pair of chairs. It weighs 8.4kg and lies 1.5cm thick, so it settles flat once it is out of the roll and does not need weighting at the corners.

The rug is woven on a traditional Indian handloom, the jute and cotton threads interlaced by hand so the surface holds an even texture with small irregularities running through it. Jute is a rain-fed crop and the fibre spins into a hard-wearing thread. The dyes are Azo free and have been tested for colourfastness and lightfastness. The Aqil is also made at 150 by 240cm.

Frequently Asked

What size is it?

200 by 300cm, and 1.5cm thick. It weighs 8.4kg.

What is it made from?

Jute and cotton, woven on a handloom.

Is there a smaller size?

Yes. The Aqil is also made at 150 by 240cm.

Does it need anything underneath?

On a hard floor, yes. A rug pad or liner protects it from wear and stops it slipping.

How do I look after it?

Blot a spill straight away with a damp sponge or a folded cloth. Vacuum with care and never with a rotating brush, which pulls at the fibres, and expect some shedding from a natural fibre. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat and moisture, and take a stubborn stain to a professional.
