Description

The Amala is a dining chair with a back panel of buffalo leather woven over and under in wide strips, set inside a mango wood frame with a rounded top rail. The seat is a padded cushion covered in the same leather, its upper face woven in narrower strips and edged with a plain rolled border. The frame is slim dark metal tube, two uprights carrying the back and four legs splaying a little towards the floor. The tan has been worked to an aged patina that sits darker along the edges and in the gaps of the weave.

At 46cm wide and 52cm deep it pushes under a dining table without the back catching the edge, and four will run along a table of about 1.6m without the backs touching. The seat is 48cm from the floor, 42cm across and 37cm deep, which is a full seat rather than a perch. It is rated to 100kg and weighs 5.6kg itself, so one hand moves it, and pulled up to a dining table the top of the back stands clear above the table edge.

The woven panel and the seat cover are buffalo leather, cut into strips and woven by hand, so the tension of the weave and the grain showing through the colour differ from chair to chair. The back frame is mango wood and the legs are iron. Leather darkens and softens where it is used, so the aged tan will deepen first on the front edge of the seat and across the middle of the back. The same chair is made in rich green.

How do I look after the leather?

A soft dry or microfibre cloth over the surface about once a week keeps dust out of the pores, and spills want lifting straight away with a dry cloth rather than scrubbed. A leather conditioner can be applied, tested first somewhere out of sight. Keep the chair out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, which dry and crack leather, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners off it.
