Description

The Amala is a dining chair with a woven leather seat and back on a frame of slim iron rod. The back panel is a basket weave of wide green leather straps, over and under, set into a rectangular mango wood surround, with small open squares showing through between the straps. The seat repeats the weave over a padded cushion with a rolled edge. The leather is a deep green with a worked surface, darker where it turns at the edges of the weave and lighter across the crowns. The four legs are round iron, splayed outwards, in a warm coppered finish.

The seat is 48cm from the floor, 42cm wide and 38cm deep, on a chair 78cm tall and 46cm across, so it takes up little more floor than the seat itself. It carries up to 100kg. The back panel is an open weave rather than a solid board, so a run of them round one table does not close the room off behind it.

The weave is buffalo leather, cut into straps and worked by hand, and the surround is mango wood. The legs are iron. Because the leather is dyed and woven by hand the depth of the green and the exact run of the straps differ from chair to chair. The Amala dining chair is also made in aged tan.

How do I look after it?

Go over the leather once a week with a soft dry or microfibre cloth so that dust and dirt do not settle into the pores. Deal with spills straight away using a dry cloth rather than scrubbing, and a slightly damp one for anything sticky. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat, which will fade, dry and crack the hide. A leather conditioner will prolong it, tested somewhere out of sight first.
