Description

The Akara is a three-tier caddy in reclaimed wood, 90cm tall, 40cm wide and 30cm deep. Four square posts run the full height and carry three open trays, each one framed by a low board on all four sides. The timber is dark and close grained, with saw marks across the boards, old fixing holes and a worn edge where the wood was cut.

At 90cm the top tray stands at about kitchen worktop height, so it lines up with a run of units or with the top of a washstand. In a bathroom it stands beside one, and the trays take bottles and jars. The footprint is 40 by 30cm, narrow enough for the gap between a bath and a wall, and the sides are open, so the trays can be reached from any direction.

The wood is reclaimed from traditional Indian homes, where it served as ceiling beams before it was cut for this. It is chosen for character and durability, then cut, assembled and finished by hand, so the grain, the colour and the old fixing marks differ from one caddy to the next. It weighs 12.5kg.

What is the wood?

Reclaimed wood, taken from the ceiling beams of traditional Indian homes.
