Description

The Abeera is a stoneware vase shaped as though a sheet of clay had been wrapped around itself and folded over at the top. A broad band crosses the upper part on a slant, overlapping the body and leaving a slim opening in one side, so the outline changes as you walk past it. It stands 20cm tall and 14.5cm across, is made of 100% stoneware and weighs 1.05KG, which gives it a steady footing on a shelf or table. The beige glaze is mottled and speckled, and it gathers in small drips along the folded edges.

At 20cm tall it suits a short bunch of dried grasses, a few twigs or a single branch, and it is just as good empty, treated as a small sculpture. We would put it on a sideboard, a mantelpiece, a bookshelf or a bedside table, anywhere it can be seen from more than one side so the fold reads properly. Its beige tone sits quietly with linen, wood, rattan and plaster walls, so it works in a living room, a hallway or a bedroom without competing with its surroundings. The body is stoneware throughout, and stoneware is a dense, hard ceramic fired at high temperature, which is why the vase feels solid and weighty in the hand.
