Description

The Knightsbridge GDM006SB is a 20AX 2-way retractive single-pole switch module finished in smoked bronze. The module clips into Knightsbridge grid mounting frames (sold separately) from the front, allowing individual switches to be combined into custom multi-gang configurations without replacing entire faceplates. The rocker is marked 'PRESS' to indicate its retractive action — the switch returns to the off position when released rather than staying latched.

Designed for applications requiring momentary switching, the retractive mechanism suits doorbell circuits, timed stairwell lighting controlled by a separate timer module, and garage door openers where brief contact triggers an automated sequence. The 20AX rating handles loads up to 4,600W on 230V mains, making it suitable for high-draw circuits beyond the capacity of standard 10AX modules. The single-pole configuration switches the live line only, while the 2-way wiring allows control from multiple locations when wired in parallel with other 2-way switches.

The smoked bronze finish provides a darker metallic tone than standard brass or chrome, sitting between gunmetal grey and copper brown in appearance. The module body is constructed from ABS plastic with steel contact terminals rated for 25-year use under normal domestic load cycling. The 35mm minimum mounting box depth requirement is standard for grid systems and compatible with most UK back boxes. IP20 rating confirms indoor-only use.

Frequently Asked

What is a retractive switch and when would I use one?

A retractive switch returns to the off position automatically when you release the rocker, unlike a standard latching switch that stays in the on position until manually switched off. This makes it ideal for doorbell circuits, momentary-contact applications like garage door openers, and timed lighting systems where a brief press triggers a separate timer module to control the duration of illumination.

What mounting frame does this module require?

This module clips into Knightsbridge grid mounting frames, sold separately. The frames are available in 1-gang, 2-gang, 3-gang and larger configurations, allowing you to build custom switch plate layouts by combining different modules (switches, sockets, dimmers, data outlets) in a single faceplate. The 24.8mm width of this module occupies one grid space.

What does 20AX mean compared to a standard 10AX switch?

20AX indicates a current rating of 20 amps, handling loads up to 4,600W on 230V mains. This is double the capacity of a standard 10AX (10 amp, 2,300W) switch module, making it suitable for higher-draw circuits such as water heaters, large appliances, or grouped lighting loads where the total wattage exceeds what a 10AX module can safely handle.

Can this module be used outdoors?

No. The IP20 rating confirms the module is designed for dry indoor locations only. For outdoor or wet-room installations, an IP-rated weatherproof enclosure or bathroom-rated grid system would be required.
