Choosing the right switch

Work out how many gangs you need and which way the circuit is switched: one-way for a single position, two-way where a light is controlled from two points. For dimmable lighting, check the dimmer is rated for LED loads and note the minimum and maximum wattage. Cooker and shower circuits need a higher-rated switch, typically 45A double pole, while bathrooms often call for a ceiling pull-cord.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a one-way and two-way switch?
A one-way switch controls a light from a single point. A two-way switch lets you control the same light from two places, such as the top and bottom of a staircase. Most plate switches can be wired either way.

Will a dimmer switch work with LED bulbs?
Only if the dimmer is marked as LED-compatible and the bulbs are dimmable. Check the dimmer's minimum and maximum wattage against the total load of your bulbs, as LEDs draw very little power.

What switch do I need for a cooker or shower?
Fixed high-power appliances such as cookers and electric showers need a double pole switch rated for the circuit, usually 45A. These isolate both live and neutral for safe switching.

What are pull-cord switches for?
Pull-cord switches operate by a hanging cord rather than a wall rocker, which keeps them away from wet hands. They are the standard choice for bathrooms and en-suites where a wall switch is not permitted in certain zones.

Can I match my switches to my sockets?
Yes. Pick the same finish and plate style, such as screwless matt black or flat-plate brushed brass, and your light switches will match your sockets across the room.
