How Low Should a Pendant Light Hang?

Drop height decides whether a pendant works or irritates. Two measuring rules cover almost every situation. Over furniture, work from the surface below rather than the ceiling: leave roughly 75cm to 90cm between a tabletop or worktop and the underside of the shade. In spaces people walk through, keep the lowest point of the fitting at least 2.1 metres above the floor. Everything else on this page builds on those two numbers.

Ceiling height changes the maths. On a standard 2.4 metre ceiling there is little spare drop in walk-through areas, so shallow shades and short suspensions earn their keep. At 2.7 metres or more a pendant has room to breathe, and a double-height void opens the door to genuinely long drops. Cables are normally set to length when the light is fitted, so agree the final figure with your electrician before the wiring goes in and check the suspension allows the drop you have planned.

Pendants Over Dining Tables

The dining table is the classic pendant position, and most of the pendants we stock suit dining rooms. Centre the light on the table rather than the room, then set it 75cm to 90cm above the tabletop. At that height the shade lights faces and food without glaring at anyone seated, and because nobody walks beneath the table the 2.1 metre rule does not apply.

Sizing is a proportion game. A shade around half to two-thirds of the table width sits comfortably, and most designs in our range fall within the small 30cm to 50cm width band, which suits the majority of four to six seat tables. Over a long rectangular table, a row of two or three matching single pendants spaced evenly along the centre line usually beats one small light marooned in the middle, and odd numbers tend to look more settled than even ones.

Grouping Pendants Over a Kitchen Island

An island follows the same drop rule, measured from the worktop: 75cm to 90cm of clear space keeps the light useful for prep while leaving sightlines open across the kitchen. Spacing matters as much as height. Divide the island length by the number of pendants plus one, hang a light at each division, and keep at least 60cm between shades so the run reads as a deliberate group. Three small pendants suit most islands, while very long runs can carry four or five. Our small-width glass and metal designs are a natural fit here, and warm white output, the most common colour temperature across the range, keeps a kitchen feeling homely rather than clinical.

Long Drops for Stairwells and Hallways

A stairwell void is the one place in most homes where a really long drop is possible, and a pendant hung through two storeys ties the levels together. Centre the light on the void rather than on either ceiling, and check clearance along the whole flight: measure head height above the nosing of each step, not just from the hallway floor. Vertical duo designs and clusters hung at staggered heights fill a tall void far better than a single small shade, which can look lost from below.

Hallways with ordinary ceilings take pendants happily too, and a good share of our range suits hallway use. Hold to the 2.1 metre clearance, pick a shallow or compact shade, and let a row of matching pendants pace out a long corridor at even intervals.

Singles, Duos and Clusters

Single one-light pendants make up the bulk of the range, and they are the flexible choice: hang one alone beside a bed in place of a lamp, or repeat several to build your own arrangement over an island or table. Where you want a ready-made group, cluster designs carry several shades from a single ceiling point, four-light versions included, and vertical duo pendants stack two diffusers on one drop. Clusters earn their place where only one ceiling outlet exists but the space asks for more, a stair void or a square hall ceiling for example. If you group separate singles instead, plan a ceiling fixing for each light or gather them on a multi-drop canopy plate.

Materials, Finishes and Bulbs

Metal shades dominate the range, joined by glass designs, including opal glass pieces that give a soft, even, ambient light, and a smaller group of alabaster pendants with a dedicated range of their own. Finishes run from white, soft white and matt grey through gold, brushed brass, copper, bronze and rose gold to chrome, black chrome and matt black, so tying a pendant to cabinet handles or table legs is rarely a problem.

On the technical side, the split is between E27 fittings, which take standard screw-in bulbs such as GLS filament lamps, and integrated LED designs with the light source built in. E27 gives you control over brightness and bulb style, while integrated LED keeps shapes slim and lines clean. Most pendants here are IP20 rated, which makes them right for dry indoor rooms: dining rooms, kitchens away from splash zones, living rooms, hallways and bedrooms. The styling leans modern, contemporary and minimalist, with a run of industrial-style designs for harder-edged schemes.
