Description

The QTX 50cm disco ball is a mirror ball built on a lightweight polyethylene core, faced with thousands of 7mm square mirror tiles that reflect pinpoint light across a room when lit by spotlights or pin spots. The ball weighs 6.5kg and comes with two hanging points welded to the top for redundant suspension safety.

Designed for medium-sized event spaces, school halls, clubs and function rooms with ceiling heights of 3-5m, the 50cm diameter provides visible movement and scatter when rotating on a motor without overwhelming smaller venues. When lit by a halogen or LED pin spot positioned 1-2m away, each mirror tile throws a separate point of reflected light onto walls, ceilings and floors, creating the classic disco ball effect of moving light points across the room.

The polyethylene core is lighter than the glass or polystyrene cores used in cheaper mirror balls, reducing the load on ceiling fixings and making the ball easier to handle during installation. The 7mm mirror tiles are bonded to the core surface with industrial adhesive and arranged in a grid pattern that minimises gaps. The dual hanging points allow the ball to be suspended from two separate ceiling hooks with independent cables, so if one cable fails the ball remains supported by the second.

Frequently Asked

Does the disco ball rotate on its own?

No. The ball is passive and needs to be hung from a separate motor to rotate. QTX and other manufacturers produce mirror ball motors rated for balls up to 30-50cm in this weight range.

What lighting is needed to create the disco ball effect?

A pin spot or narrow-beam spotlight positioned 1-2m from the ball creates the classic scattered light pattern. White light produces white reflections; coloured gels or LED spots produce coloured reflections. The more light sources aimed at the ball, the denser the pattern of reflections.

How is it suspended safely?

The ball has two separate hanging points welded to the top. Run independent cables or chains from each point to separate ceiling fixings, so the ball remains supported if one cable fails. Always use fixings rated for at least double the ball's 6.5kg weight.

Can it be used outdoors?

The polyethylene core and mirror tiles are moisture-resistant but not weatherproof. The ball can be used in covered outdoor areas where it will not be directly exposed to rain, but prolonged outdoor use will degrade the adhesive bonding the tiles to the core.
