Description

The PotLight is a table lamp built like a lantern: a round ceramic base in a warm terracotta colour, topped with two glass cylinders, one inside the other. The outer glass is clear, the inner one frosted, so the bulb glows softly through the centre rather than glaring. It stands 26cm tall and 21cm across, a compact size for a side table or shelf. It takes one E27 bulb, which is not included, so you choose the colour of the light and how bright it is: a warm white bulb gives a gentle evening glow, a cooler one a crisper light.

Its real charm is the gap between the two glasses. Leave it empty for a clean glass lantern, or fill it with something of your own: curls of wood shavings, a sheet of handmade paper, cut card shapes that throw patterned shadows when the lamp is on. That makes it a lovely lamp for a living room sideboard, a bedside table or the middle of a dining table, where you can change the filling for a birthday, a family gathering or Christmas. It is rated IP20, so it is for dry rooms only, and it comes with a UK plug for any ordinary socket.

The base is ceramic and both layers of the shade are glass, a simple pairing that sits as happily in a warm, rustic room as in a plainer modern one. The design is by Josep Novell and Josep Puig. The lamp is not dimmable, so choose a bulb of the brightness you want from the start rather than planning on a dimmer switch. As a styling note, we like it with an earthy filling beside terracotta pots or pale ceramics, where the colour of the base ties the group together, and with something brighter when the table is laid for a party.
