Description

This is the Marigold cushion, a 50 x 50cm square carrying an 1875 William Morris design of swirling foliage and sunburst marigolds. The pattern is woven rather than printed: a textured jacquard where the flowers and ruffled leaves come up in white against a stone-coloured ground, so the motif has depth and a slight raised texture rather than sitting flat on the surface. It is finished with velvet piping around all four edges, which frames the square neatly and gives the seam a soft, rounded line. The design runs across both faces, so the cushion is fully reversible and reads the same whichever way it lands.

A square this size is the workhorse of a sofa or a bed, big enough to sit against and support your back rather than purely decorate. The stone-and-white palette is quiet and warm, which makes it easy to place: it settles happily among greens, other neutrals and darker botanical prints without competing for attention. Set it against a plain sofa to bring the Morris pattern forward, or layer it with the wider Marigold and Morris range where the same archive designs appear across cushions, curtains and more. It suits a living room, a reading chair or a bed equally.

The cover is 100% polyester, which is the practical part of the story: it holds colour well, resists creasing and stands up to daily handling on a much-used seat. The velvet piping is a woven trim run around the edge, and a zip closure lets you take the cover off when it needs a freshen up. Because it is double-sided, you can turn it over to even out wear or simply change how it looks. It is a versatile, hard-wearing square that carries a genuine piece of design history.

Frequently Asked

Is the cover removable for cleaning?

Yes. There is a zip closure along one edge, so you can take the cover off the pad when it needs freshening up rather than washing the whole cushion.

Is the pattern the same on both sides?

It is. The Marigold design is woven on both faces, so the cushion is fully reversible and looks the same whichever side is showing.

What does jacquard mean here?

The pattern is woven into the fabric rather than printed onto it, which gives the marigolds and foliage a subtle raised texture and lets the motif catch the light.

What size is the cushion and what does it suit?

It measures 50 by 50cm, a generous square that works well on a sofa, an armchair or a bed where you want something to lean against as well as look at.

Whose design is the marigold pattern?

It is an 1875 pattern by the designer William Morris, showing sunburst marigolds among swirling, ruffled foliage in a classic botanical style.
