Description

The AV:Link USB-C to 3.5mm adapter converts a USB Type-C port on smartphones, tablets and laptops into a standard 3.5mm headphone socket. An integrated DAC (digital-to-analogue converter) chip inside the adapter body processes the digital audio signal from the USB-C port and outputs it as an analogue signal to the 3.5mm jack, allowing conventional wired headphones to work with devices that no longer carry a dedicated headphone socket.

The adapter suits daily use with modern Android smartphones, tablets, and USB-C equipped laptops where a 3.5mm headphone output has been removed from the hardware. The 140mm total length (including both the USB-C plug and the 3.5mm socket ends) gives enough cable to reach from a device in a pocket or on a desk to headphones worn at ear level without strain on the connection. The adapter weighs 4g and can be coiled or left plugged into headphones when not in use.

The DAC chip inside the adapter ensures compatibility with a range of USB-C devices that support audio-over-USB-C protocols. Not all USB-C ports output audio — some USB-C ports are data-only or charge-only — so compatibility depends on whether the source device supports the USB Audio Class standard. The adapter outputs analogue audio, so it works with passive headphones, earbuds and headsets with in-line microphone controls.

Frequently Asked

Does this work with all USB-C devices?

The adapter works with USB-C devices that support audio output over USB-C (USB Audio Class standard). Most modern Android smartphones and tablets support this, but some USB-C ports are data-only or charge-only and will not output audio. Check your device specifications before purchasing.

What is the DAC and why is it needed?

The DAC (digital-to-analogue converter) chip inside the adapter converts the digital audio signal from the USB-C port into an analogue signal that conventional 3.5mm headphones can use. Without the DAC, passive headphones would not work with a USB-C audio output.

Will this work with headphones that have in-line controls?

Yes. The adapter outputs analogue audio, so it supports passive headphones, earbuds and headsets with in-line microphone and playback controls, provided the controls are compatible with your source device.

How long is the cable?

The total length from USB-C plug to 3.5mm socket is 140mm, with the cable section itself measuring 45mm. This gives enough reach to connect from a device in a pocket or on a desk to headphones at ear level without strain on the connectors.
