Matt black plates for dark and feature walls

Matt black works hardest against deep, moody decor: charcoal paint, dark tiling, exposed brick and panelled feature walls. The screwless front clips over a mounting frame so no fixing screws show, which keeps the look flat and uninterrupted across the plate. Most fronts in our Knightsbridge range are metal, and many pair the matt black plate with a chrome rocker or chrome insert if you want a little contrast against the black, or a black insert if you prefer the plate to read as one solid tone.

Keeping a single finish through a room

To hold a scheme together, it helps to run the same finish across everything on the wall, not just the sockets. The matt black range covers single and multi-gang switches, 13A switched and unswitched sockets, dimmer plates, blanking plates and fused spur units, so a run of outlets and switches can share one front. Blanking plates cover unused grid positions and openings, which stops a tidy wall being broken up by gaps.

Touchless, key card and access control options

Beyond standard switching, the range includes a touchless switch and a key card switch. A touchless switch operates without contact, which suits clinical, hygiene-conscious or high-traffic spaces where people would rather not press a plate. A key card switch is the type often used in hotel rooms and lettings to drop power when a card is removed. Both come in the same matt black screwless front, so access control sits alongside the rest of the wall rather than standing out.

Power, charging and data in matt black

The range carries more than lighting switches. We stock USB sockets with USB-A and USB-C fast charge for bedside and desk runs, dual voltage shaver sockets for bathrooms, and a spread of switching modes including single pole and double pole. For media walls and home offices, there are CAT5e and CAT6a network outlets, BT telephone sockets and TV coaxial outlets, plus 10-200W intelligent dimmers. Cooker switches, fan isolator switches and flex outlet plates round out the heavier-duty fittings. Anything involving fixed wiring should be installed by a qualified electrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a screwless plate different from a standard one?

A screwless plate uses a two-part design. A mounting frame is fitted to the wall box first, then the matt black front clips over it so no fixing screws are visible on the face. The result is a flat, unbroken front. A standard plate is fixed with two visible screws through the faceplate. The function behind the plate is the same; the difference is the clean appearance of the front.

Will matt black show fingermarks and dust?

Matt black hides surface shine better than a polished finish, so it tends to disguise light fingermarks more than gloss plates do. Fine dust can be more noticeable against a dark, flat surface in strong light. A wipe with a dry or barely damp soft cloth usually clears it. Several plates in our range pair the matt black front with a chrome rocker or insert if you want a contrasting touch point.

What is a key card switch used for?

A key card switch holds power on while a card is inserted in the slot and drops it when the card is removed. It is the type commonly fitted in hotel rooms, serviced apartments and lettings to save energy when a room is empty. In our matt black range it shares the same screwless front as the standard switches, so it blends into the rest of the wall rather than looking like a separate fitting.

Can I mix matt black with other finishes on the same wall?

You can, and many of the plates already do it within a single fitting by combining a matt black front with a chrome rocker or chrome insert. If you want the plate to read as one solid tone instead, look for the black insert versions. Across a room it usually looks tidiest to keep the plate finish consistent and let inserts or rockers add any contrast you want.

Do I need an electrician to fit these?

Anything that connects to fixed mains wiring, such as sockets, switches, cooker switches, fused spurs and isolators, should be installed by a qualified electrician. They can confirm the box depth and wiring are suitable for the plate you have chosen and make sure the screwless frame is mounted correctly. If you are only swapping a like-for-like front, an electrician can still advise on whether it is safe to do so.
