Why glass suits a pendant

A ceiling fitting is only ever seen from below. A pendant hangs in the room, so you see it from the side, at eye level, lit from within. Glass is the only common shade material that behaves as an object and a light source at once: it glows across its whole surface rather than simply directing light downwards, and it keeps a room feeling open where a solid shade would read as a block. That is why glass dominates pendant design in a way it does not dominate ceiling fittings.

Globe, dome, cone or cylinder

Shape decides where the light goes as much as the glass does. A globe throws light in every direction and lifts a whole room, which suits a hallway or a bedside. A dome directs most of it downwards into a defined pool, which is what you want over a table. A cone is tighter still and the most task-focused. A cylinder throws up and down in roughly equal measure, washing the ceiling as well as the surface below, and it suits a room with height to show it off. Match the shape to the job before falling for the glass.

Clear glass means choosing the bulb

With clear glass the lamp is visible and becomes part of the design, so the bulb is not an afterthought. A clear filament lamp in a vintage shape suits an industrial or period look; a compact opal-tipped lamp reads cleaner and more contemporary. Whatever you choose, the lamp will be looked at, so it is worth buying a decent one. Clear glass also throws sharper shadows and more sparkle than any other type, which is lovely over a dining table and harsh directly over a desk.

Smoked, amber and tinted over a table

Tinted glass warms and dims the light in a way no bulb choice replicates. Smoked grey reads as moody and contemporary; amber and champagne read as warm and softer again. Both cut output noticeably, so a tinted pendant is a mood light rather than a room light. Over a dining table that is exactly right, since the table is lit and the rest of the room falls away. In a kitchen where you actually prepare food, pair it with under-cabinet lighting rather than expecting it to do both jobs.

Clusters and staggered drops

Glass clusters, where several globes or cylinders drop from one plate at different heights, give the effect of a group from a single ceiling point. They work best where they can be seen in the round, over a round table or in a stairwell rather than tight against a wall. Vary the heights meaningfully, by 15cm or more, since a small difference reads as a mistake rather than a design. Keep the lowest glass at least 2.1m above any floor people walk across.

Fragility and replacement shades

The practical point worth knowing before buying. Glass shades break, and on many fittings the shade is not separately available, which means a broken globe can mean replacing the whole pendant. Before buying a cluster in particular, check whether individual shades can be ordered. Keep the original packaging if you can, since glass pendants are the fittings most often damaged when moving house. And when fitting, tighten retaining screws only to finger-firm, as over-tightening is the most common cause of a cracked shade.

Cleaning glass at height

Dust first with a dry microfibre cloth, then wipe with a barely damp one and dry immediately, since glass shows every water mark once it dries in place. Let the lamp cool first, because a warm shade will streak whatever you use. Never spray cleaner at a fitting on a ladder: it runs down into the lampholder and the flex. Clear glass shows dust least and fingerprints most; opal is the reverse.
