Description

A small black rubber washer, sold in packs of five, for the quiet jobs that keep a light fitting looking and sounding right. It is a flat ring, only 2mm thick, soft enough to squash slightly under pressure and firm enough to hold its shape. Black keeps it discreet against dark metalwork, and the low profile means it all but disappears once a shade ring or threaded shoulder is drawn up against it. We keep these in the drawer beside our lampholders, because they solve more problems than their price suggests.

Reach for them where two hard surfaces meet and you want a little give: under the collar of a lampholder, between a metal shade and its gallery, or beneath the foot of a table lamp that slides about on a polished shelf. The rubber takes up small gaps, spreads pressure so a painted or lacquered finish is not scuffed, and quietens the faint rattle you sometimes get when metal sits straight on metal. They suit anyone putting a fitting back together at home, and they are just as handy for anyone building lights from separate parts. Nothing electrical passes through them, and they are meant for dry rooms indoors.

The rubber runs right through, so there is no coating to wear off, and both faces are cut clean and smooth. Rubber does not care for oils or solvents, so keep white spirit and household sprays well away; a dry cloth is enough, and a washer that has gone hard or misshapen can simply be swapped for the next one in the pack. It carries a one year warranty. The wider range covers the other small parts that tend to be needed at the same time, among them E27 lampholders in black and white, cable grips in clear and black, and adjustable lampholder converters.
