Description

A chest of drawers, 60cm tall, in grey. At 50cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. A chest is bought for the drawers and lived with for the top. It is nearly always the surface a lamp, a mirror and everything else ends up on.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. A veneered surface gives the look of the timber without its weight or its appetite for humidity. It is not solid wood and does not behave like it — a deep scratch goes through to the board rather than sanding out. Steel carries a load through a thinner section than any timber can, which is why a steel frame can look this light and still not flex. Powder-coated, it takes a knock as a chip rather than a dent. The body is MDF under the finish, which is what keeps a piece this size affordable and dimensionally stable — MDF does not move with the seasons the way solid timber does. 1 drawers.

An anti-tip wall strap is included, and on a tall piece it should be used.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses. Count the drawers against what goes in them: deep drawers suit jumpers and shallow ones suit everything else, and an all-deep chest wastes half its space.
