Description

A sideboard, 76cm tall, in black. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 139cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A sideboard is the one piece that stores a lot and still presents a surface, which is why it outlives most other furniture in a room. It works in a dining room, a hall or a living room equally.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. A veneered surface gives the look of the timber without its weight or its appetite for humidity. It is not solid wood and does not behave like it — a deep scratch goes through to the board rather than sanding out. Steel carries a load through a thinner section than any timber can, which is why a steel frame can look this light and still not flex. Powder-coated, it takes a knock as a chip rather than a dent.

A panel that carries weight over a span will sag eventually if the span is long enough. Shorter shelves, or a centre support, is what prevents it — not a thicker board.
