A hanging basket, 25cm wide, in soft grey. At 25cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Baskets work in multiples more than singly. Two or three of graduated size read as a scheme where a single one reads as an afterthought, and a nested set solves the problem of what to do with them when they are empty.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. Moulded plastic is light and unbothered by being knocked, which is what makes it sensible where something will be handled or moved often. It will chalk slightly after years of direct sun. The strength is in the section, not the bulk: steel holds its shape at a thickness that would flex in almost anything else. It is heavier than aluminium, which is a virtue indoors and a consideration if the piece has to be moved often. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly.

Handles matter far more than they look. A basket without them cannot be moved when it is full, which is exactly the moment you want to move it, and a handle that is woven in outlasts one that is stitched on.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
