Description

A canvas wall art, 90cm tall, in natural. At 60cm wide it is a little narrower than a standard interior door. Wall art is the one purchase judged entirely on where it goes. Hang the centre at eye level rather than centring it on the wall, and give a single piece more empty wall around it than instinct suggests.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. The body is MDF beneath the finish, which is what holds a panel this size flat. Solid timber of the same width would move with the humidity of the room and eventually show it at a joint. Expanded polystyrene is used where a form needs to be large and weigh almost nothing. It gives the shape without the mass, which is what allows an oversized piece to hang or stand on a light fixing.

It hangs on a d-ring. D-rings will not self-level the way a single hook does, so the two fixings have to be at the same height. That is the whole difficulty, and a level solves it.

There is nothing delicate about it. The finish takes a wipe, there is no crevice collecting dust and no fabric to mark, which is the practical case for it in a room that actually gets used.

Measure the wall, then take two thirds of its width as the upper limit for a single piece. Above a sofa or a console, aim for roughly the width of the furniture beneath it.
