Description

A side table, 65cm tall, in natural. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Height decides whether a side table is used: too low and a mug is a stretch, too high and it fights the arm of the chair. This one sits where most sofas and armchairs want it.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. The timber here is a veneer: a thin layer of the real wood, or a printed reproduction of it, laid over a stable board core. That is why the grain runs continuously across a panel this wide, which solid timber of the same width could not do without moving.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. A pair reads as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two will sit either side of a bed without crowding the table.

Judge the top, not the footprint. Room for a lamp, a book and a mug at once is a table that stays; room for a mug alone is a table that gets moved.
