Description

A wall art, 48cm tall, in natural. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Wall art is the one purchase judged entirely on where it goes. Hang the centre at eye level rather than centring it on the wall, and give a single piece more empty wall around it than instinct suggests.

A natural surface lightens or mellows slightly with sunlight over a few years. That is the material ageing rather than the finish failing, and most people prefer it at five years to how it looked at one. Pieces bought as a set have already been matched for finish and proportion, which is the hard part of grouping anything. Split them between rooms and they still read as related. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. Canvas is a plain, tightly woven cloth stiff enough to hold a shape without a frame. That structure is why a canvas basket stands up rather than slumping.

It hangs on a sawtooth hook. The sawtooth sits over a nail or a small hook and can be shifted a tooth at a time to straighten it. Convenient, and strictly for light weights. Supplied as a set of 2.

Measure the wall, then take two thirds of its width as the upper limit for a single piece. Above a sofa or a console, aim for roughly the width of the furniture beneath it.
