Description

A canvas wall art, 60cm tall, in black. At 40cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Wall art is the one purchase judged entirely on where it goes. Hang the centre at eye level rather than centring it on the wall, and give a single piece more empty wall around it than instinct suggests.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. Pieces bought as a set have already been matched for finish and proportion, which is the hard part of grouping anything. Split them between rooms and they still read as related. Expanded polystyrene is used where a form needs to be large and weigh almost nothing. It gives the shape without the mass, which is what allows an oversized piece to hang or stand on a light fixing. Canvas is a plain, tightly woven cloth stiff enough to hold a shape without a frame. That structure is why a canvas basket stands up rather than slumping.

It hangs on a triangle hook. It hangs from one point, so it straightens itself. At this weight a picture hook is enough, and if the hook ends up a few millimetres off it will not show. Supplied as a set of 2.

Measure the wall, then take two thirds of its width as the upper limit for a single piece. Above a sofa or a console, aim for roughly the width of the furniture beneath it.
