Our Seraphina is a rectangular velvet ottoman in raspberry, buttoned in a diamond pattern that runs across the top and continues down the sides. It measures 80 x 40cm overall and stands 38cm high, with a seat of 78 x 38cm, and it needs no assembly, so it is ready to use once unpacked. The oblong shape is what makes it adaptable: there is room enough on top for it to work as occasional seating, a coffee table or a footstool, so one piece covers whichever job your room needs most.

Each of those uses comes with something worth checking. As a footstool, compare its 38cm height with the seat of your sofa or armchair, because a footstool generally works best level with the seat or a little below it. As a coffee table, bear in mind that buttoning gives a padded, dimpled top rather than a flat one, so a tray provides a level place for cups and glasses. As a seat, it suits the foot of a bed, a bay window or a narrow hallway where a chair with a back would crowd the space, and at 40cm deep it sits close in without taking over the floor.
