Saona Recessed Square Downlight 80mm Cut-Out 4000K - Matt White

A shallow square light with a matt white bezel, made to sit down into the ceiling so only the face shows. The LED is built in and runs at 4000K, a clean neutral white that keeps whites looking white and stops warm rooms turning yellow under artificial light. The spread is wide rather than tight, so a line of them gives even cover across a ceiling instead of scalloped pools. Its driver is supplied with it. It is not dimmable, so we would wire it to a plain switch.

It takes an 80mm cut-out and draws 6W, so you can plan plenty of light points across a ceiling without a heavy total load. We reach for these in hallways, landings, utility rooms and along kitchen perimeters, and they suit a home office where a cooler tone keeps paperwork and screens comfortable to read. The square face lines up tidily with tiles, cupboard runs and square ceiling details, which is worth having where a round downlight would sit at odds with everything else. It belongs in dry rooms indoors; a shower area or a covered porch wants something sealed against damp.

Finished in matt white throughout, it reads quietly against a painted ceiling rather than pulling the eye upward. Keeping it clean is a matter of a dry microfibre cloth across the face and bezel with the power off first, leaving sprays and damp cloths well alone. It carries a three year warranty. The LED is integral, so there is no lamp to source.

What size hole does it need?

The cut-out is 80mm. The visible face measures 90mm by 90mm square, so the bezel covers a small margin around the opening.

How bright is it?

It gives 540 lumens from 6W, with a neutral 4000K colour. That suits general ambient light in halls, landings and utility rooms, and several in a run will light a kitchen perimeter comfortably.

Can it be dimmed?

No. It is a non-dimmable fitting, so it should be run from a standard on/off switch rather than a dimmer.

Do I need a separate driver?

No, the driver is supplied with the fitting.

How deep is it?

The body stands 25mm high, which is what makes it an ultra slim downlight rather than a conventional deep can type.

How should I clean it?

Switch the power off and let it cool, then wipe the face and bezel with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid solvents and sprays, which can mark a matt white finish.
