Saona Recessed Square Downlight 130mm Cut-Out 4000K - Matt White

A slim square downlight with a matt white face, it sits quietly in the ceiling line and gives a broad, even wash of light rather than a tight beam. The integrated LED draws 12W and runs at 4000K, a crisp cool white that keeps paintwork looking clean and worktops clearly lit. The cut-out it needs is 130mm. A driver is supplied with it, and there is no dimming, so it works as a simple on and off fitting.

We fit these in kitchens, hallways, landings and home offices, usually several to a room so the light lands evenly instead of in pools. The wide spread suits lower ceilings and open plan spaces where you want steady brightness without a row of hard little spots overhead. It is intended for dry rooms indoors on an ordinary household circuit, and we would keep it well away from shower areas or anywhere steam and splashes gather. In a bedroom or a snug, the warm white flush fittings in the range may sit easier.

The face is matt white throughout, plain edged and shallow in section, so it reads as part of the ceiling rather than as hardware sitting below it. It is double insulated, and the light source is built in rather than lamped, so there is nothing to replace over its working life. For cleaning, turn the power off at the switch and give it a moment to cool, then take dust off the face with a dry cloth; a barely damp cloth and a dry wipe afterwards will lift any cooking film in a kitchen. What size aperture does it need?

It calls for a 130mm cut-out. The visible face measures 145mm square, so it covers the opening with a modest margin all round.

How much light does it give?

1080lm from a 12W integrated LED, spread over a wide 113 degree beam for general room lighting rather than accent work.

Can it be dimmed?

No. It is a non-dimmable fitting and should be run from a standard on and off switch.

How deep is the body?

Just 25mm, which is why it is described as ultra slim. It weighs 0.37kg.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

It is rated IP20, so it belongs in dry rooms only. Choose a fitting with a suitable IP rating for zoned bathroom areas.

Does the LED need replacing?

No. The LED is integrated and rated at around 30,000 hours, and the driver is included with the fitting.
