Description

This is a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor that switches connected lighting on when it detects movement, then off again after a set delay. Decoded from the ALER N-W reference, it runs on a 220-240V AC mains supply and sits in a compact 120 × 80 × 52 mm white plastic housing. The IP65 rating means it is sealed against dust and low-pressure water jets, so it works on sheltered exterior walls, porches, entrances and outbuildings as well as indoors.

It wires in line with a luminaire to give automatic switching for security, access and energy saving, and the white finish keeps it discreet on most wall colours. Mount it at the manufacturer's recommended height for a clean detection field across the area you want covered. What is the detection range and angle?

As a PIR sensor it reads body heat moving across its field of view, with the widest coverage when movement crosses the beam rather than walking straight towards it. Mount it at the recommended height and aim it across the approach to the area you want monitored for the best result.

What is the maximum load it can switch?

Stay within the connected load limit stated by the manufacturer when wiring it to a luminaire or lighting circuit. If you are switching several or high-wattage fittings, use a contactor or relay so the sensor is not overloaded.

Can the time and light level be adjusted?

PIR sensors of this kind typically have adjusters for the on-time delay and the ambient light threshold, so it can be set to trigger only after dark. Set these to suit the location once the unit is mounted and wired.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. Its IP65 rating seals it against dust and water jets, so it is suitable for sheltered outdoor positions such as porches, entrances and external walls, as well as indoor use.
