Description

The Odisha cushion puts a single embroidered bird at its centre, a tropical species picked out in rust, amber and slate blue, perched among tall fanning fronds worked in gold thread. It is a square cushion, 45 x 45cm, made from velvet with a smooth velvet reverse. The face carries the embroidery and the metallic foliage; the back is left plain so the cushion reads as a print piece from one side and a solid emerald from the other. A matching piped velvet border runs the whole way round the edge, giving the cushion a defined, tailored outline rather than a soft rolled seam.

At 45 x 45cm this is the standard square that most sofas and armchairs are built around, so it sits comfortably against a scatter of other 45cm cushions or holds its own as the one worked piece among plainer companions. The deep emerald ground is what makes the embroidery carry, so it earns its keep against warm upholstery, mustard and ochre velvets, natural linen and mid-tone woods, where the orange of the bird and the gold of the fronds have something to answer to. Turn it to the plain reverse and you have a straightforward green velvet cushion for days when you want the pattern to rest.

Velvet has a directional pile, which is why the colour shifts as the light and your hand move across it, and it is that pile that gives the cushion its depth of colour. The cover closes with a zip, so it comes off cleanly for cleaning and goes back on without fuss. The piped trim holds the shape of the edge over time. Styled on its own or layered with the plain velvets and neutrals it likes, the Odisha is the cushion that does the talking in a group.

Frequently Asked

What is the cushion made from?

The cover is 100% polyester velvet, with the same velvet used for the smooth reverse and the piped trim that runs around the edge.

Is the design printed or embroidered?

The bird and the foliage are embroidered, with the fronds picked out in gold metallic thread, so the pattern has real raised texture rather than a flat printed surface.

What size is the cushion and does it suit a standard sofa?

It measures 45 x 45cm, the standard square that most sofas and armchairs are sized around, so it layers easily with other 45cm cushions.

Does the cover come off?

Yes, there is a zip closure along one edge, so the cover can be removed and put back on without difficulty.

What is on the back of the cushion?

The reverse is plain velvet in the same emerald green, so you can turn it over for a solid colour when you want the embroidery to rest.

What does it go well with?

The deep emerald ground with rust, amber and blue embroidery sits well against warm upholstery, mustard velvets, natural linen and mid-tone woods.
