Description

The Mika is a 160cm extendable dining table that seats six in its closed configuration and extends to 220cm to seat eight, built around a sculptural dark oxide brown steel base supporting a clear 12mm safety glass top. The base is constructed from flat steel sections arranged in an angular, folded geometry that presents differently from each viewing angle, with high-gloss stainless steel edge trim running along the upper supports where the glass rests.

Designed for contemporary dining rooms and open-plan kitchen-diners where the table acts as both functional surface and architectural feature, the Mika suits spaces with floor-to-ceiling heights of 2.4m or above where the base geometry can be appreciated from standing positions. The 75cm table height is standard dining height, allowing pairing with chairs in the 45-48cm seat height range. The extension mechanism adds a central leaf stored within the table structure, allowing the table to be set at either 160cm or 220cm depending on guest count.

The dark oxide brown finish on the steel base provides a warm metallic tone that sits between raw steel and traditional bronze, pairing well with walnut, oak and other mid-brown wood tones in chair frames and cabinetry. The clear glass top allows the full base geometry to be visible from above, turning the structural form into the table's primary visual feature. At 95.9kg the table requires two people to move and provides substantial stability once positioned. The 12mm safety glass is polished along all edges and resists everyday scratching and heat marking from serving dishes up to moderate temperatures.

Frequently Asked

How does the extension mechanism work?

The Mika uses a central leaf stored within the table frame. To extend, the two halves of the glass top slide apart on a tracked mechanism, revealing the stored leaf which is then raised to sit flush with the main glass surface. This takes the table from 160cm to 220cm, adding two additional place settings.

What weight can the glass top support?

The 12mm safety glass is designed for typical dining use including serving dishes, crockery, glassware and centrepieces. Schuller does not publish a specific static load rating, but the glass is substantially thicker than standard residential tabletop glass (typically 6-8mm) and is supported across multiple points by the steel base.

Is the glass heat-resistant?

The tempered safety glass resists moderate heat from serving dishes and dinner plates. For hot cookware directly from the hob or oven, use trivets or heat-resistant mats to avoid thermal shock which can cause surface stress over time.

Can the base finish be touched up if scratched?

The dark oxide brown finish is a factory-applied coating on steel. Minor surface marks can sometimes be buffed out with a microfibre cloth, but deep scratches that expose the underlying steel would require professional refinishing and are not easily repaired at home.
