Description

The Mercury is an 87 x 87 x 48mm IP55-rated weatherproof junction box moulded from white polycarbonate with a hinged lid and rubber seal. The IP55 rating provides protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor locations where electrical connections need protection from rain, moisture and airborne particles.

Designed for outdoor lighting installations, garden power circuits, CCTV camera feeds and external telecoms wiring, the Mercury accommodates terminal blocks, connectors and cable joints where they would otherwise be exposed to the elements. The box includes nine pre-formed M20 knockouts around the perimeter, allowing cables to be routed in from multiple directions without drilling custom entry points. Standard M20 cable glands thread into the knockouts to seal around the cable sheath.

The white polycarbonate housing resists impact and UV degradation better than ABS or PVC alternatives, maintaining structural integrity through freeze-thaw cycles and prolonged sunlight exposure. At 46g the box is light enough to be mounted on masonry, timber cladding or fence posts using external fixings through the rear mounting lugs. The hinged lid clicks shut over a continuous rubber gasket that compresses around the full perimeter to maintain the IP55 seal.

Can this be used in fully exposed outdoor locations?

The IP55 rating provides protection against low-pressure water jets, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor locations such as under eaves, in porch ceilings, or behind cladding. For fully exposed locations subject to driving rain or temporary immersion, a higher IP rating (IP65 or IP66) is recommended.

What size cable glands fit the M20 knockouts?

The nine knockouts are sized for standard M20 cable glands, which typically accommodate cables between 6mm and 12mm diameter depending on the specific gland model. Cable glands are sold separately.

How is the box mounted?

The rear panel has mounting lugs for external fixing screws. For masonry use appropriate wall plugs and corrosion-resistant screws; for timber use stainless or zinc-plated wood screws to prevent rust staining on the white housing.

Is the box suitable for mains voltage connections?

The Mercury provides mechanical and environmental protection for electrical connections but does not carry a voltage rating on its own. Connections inside must comply with BS 7671 wiring regulations, using appropriately rated terminal blocks or connectors for the circuit voltage and current.
