Description

The Mercury 7 core trailer cable is a 100m reel of multi-core flexible cable designed for low voltage trailer and caravan tail light wiring. Each of the seven cores contains 22 strands of 0.19mm diameter copper wire, giving a combined cross-sectional area of 0.62mm² per core. The outer sheath is black PVC with a 9.0mm overall diameter, and the cable is rated for 30V at 10A maximum current per core.

Built for trailer lighting circuits, caravan accessory wiring and automotive applications requiring multiple circuits in a single cable run, the seven-core configuration matches the standard UK trailer wiring colour code for rear lights, indicators, brake lights and auxiliary functions. The flexible construction allows routing around corners, through chassis frames and along trailer beds without kinking, and the black sheath resists abrasion from road grit, moisture and UV exposure during outdoor use.

The 100m reel length is supplied as two 50m reels, allowing a typical 6-7m trailer to be wired from a single reel with enough spare cable for looping, strain relief and future repairs. The 0.62mm² CSA per core provides adequate current capacity for standard 21W indicator and brake bulbs without voltage drop over the length of a typical caravan or trailer harness, and the stranded construction maintains flexibility in cold weather where solid-core cable would stiffen.

Frequently Asked

What is this cable used for?

This seven-core cable is designed for trailer and caravan tail light circuits, where multiple functions (rear lights, indicators, brake lights, fog lights, reverse lights, earth and auxiliary) need to run in a single cable between the towing vehicle and the trailer. The colour-coded cores match standard UK trailer wiring conventions.

Is 0.62mm² adequate for trailer lighting?

Yes. Most trailer indicator and brake bulbs are 21W, drawing approximately 1.75A at 12V. The 0.62mm² CSA per core comfortably handles this load over the 6-8m length of a typical trailer without significant voltage drop. For high-power LED light bars or winches, a heavier gauge cable would be needed.

Can this cable be used outdoors?

Yes. The black PVC sheath is suitable for outdoor automotive use and resists moisture, road grit and UV exposure. However, the cable is not armoured, so avoid routing it where it will be crushed, abraded by sharp edges or subjected to continuous flexing at a single point.

What does '7 x 22' mean in the specification?

This describes the strand construction: seven cores, each containing 22 individual strands of 0.19mm diameter copper wire. The multiple fine strands give the cable flexibility, while the seven cores allow separate circuits to be run in one sheath.
