Description

The Mercury F5A is a 6 x 32mm quick blow fuse rated at 5A and 250V, supplied in a pack of six. Quick blow (also called fast-acting) fuses respond to overcurrent faults within milliseconds, interrupting the circuit before heat builds in the protected device. This makes them appropriate for equipment where even brief overcurrent can cause component damage, such as audio amplifiers, lighting control circuits and electronic test equipment.

The 6 x 32mm cartridge format is a universal fuse size used in appliance plugs, consumer electronics, industrial control boards and distribution panels across domestic and commercial installations. The fuse meets IEC specifications for dimensional tolerance and breaking capacity, ensuring compatibility with standard 6 x 32mm fuse clips and holders.

Each fuse consists of a glass tube with metal end caps and a thin internal wire element that melts when current exceeds 5A. The glass body allows visual inspection to confirm whether the fuse has blown—the internal element visibly breaks and darkens. Once blown, the fuse must be replaced; it cannot be reset. The pack of six provides spares for repeated fault conditions or multiple appliances requiring 5A protection.

Frequently Asked

What does 'quick blow' mean?

Quick blow (also called fast-acting or F-type) fuses interrupt the circuit rapidly when current exceeds the rated value, typically within milliseconds. This contrasts with slow-blow (T-type) fuses, which tolerate brief overcurrent surges without blowing, making them suitable for motors and transformers that draw high inrush current on startup.

What voltage are these fuses rated for?

The Mercury F5A is rated at 250V. This means the fuse can safely interrupt faults on circuits up to 250V without arcing or sustaining the fault condition. It is compatible with standard UK 230V mains circuits and lower-voltage DC systems.

Can these be used in a plug fuse holder?

Yes, provided the plug or appliance is designed for a 6 x 32mm fuse and specifies a 5A rating. The 6 x 32mm format is a universal cartridge size, so the fuse fits any holder or clip designed for that dimension.

How can you tell if the fuse has blown?

The glass tube allows visual inspection. A blown fuse shows a broken or missing internal wire element, often with blackening or discolouration inside the glass. If the element appears intact and connected between both end caps, the fuse is still functional.
