Description

The Lucca is a rounded tub armchair upholstered in dove grey velvet. Its arms rise to the height of the back and curve round the seat in one continuous line, so you sit within the chair rather than perched on it, and piping runs along the top edge and down the front of each arm to keep the curve crisp. It measures 80cm wide, 72cm deep and 70cm high, with the seat 43cm from the floor, and it stands on slim, tapered metal legs that hold the body clear of the ground and keep the shape looking light.

It earns its place as extra seating around the coffee table, giving a guest a proper seat of their own beside the sofa, and it works just as well as a feature chair in a bedroom, by a window or tucked into a corner. In a narrow room the 72cm depth is the figure to check, because it decides how far the chair comes out from the wall and how much walkway is left in front of it. Dove grey is an easy neutral, as comfortable against white walls and warm timber as beside charcoal, navy or deep green.

The cover is polyester velvet, a pile fabric whose short, upright fibres catch the light, so the grey reads paler where light falls on it and deeper in shadow. Beneath it is sponge padding, with pine wood, plywood and iron making up the rest of the build. Velvet covers the outside of the arms too, so the chair looks finished from the side as well as the front, which matters when it is angled across a room. It comes in one box and needs partial assembly. Add a knitted or bobbled cushion for contrast with the smooth pile, and a lamp at shoulder height to make a reading corner of it.
