Description

A vase, 31cm tall, in light grey. At 17cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. Vases group better than they stand alone. Three of different heights in the same material read as a collection, where three of the same height read as stock.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. The texture is in the surface rather than printed on it, so it catches light at the ridges and shades in the hollows. A flat finish reads as one colour from any distance; a textured one reads as several. Terracotta is unglazed fired clay, so it is porous — it breathes, it darkens where it is watered, and it develops a chalky bloom over time. Planters are made from it for exactly that reason.

At 2.62kg it is heavy enough to stand on the floor without being knocked over by a passing foot.

Weight is worth a thought with anything tall. A light vase with a heavy arrangement in it is a spill waiting for a passing sleeve.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
