Description

A cabinet, 80cm tall, in natural. At 107cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. It wants a wall it can sit flat against and door clearance in front. A cabinet in a walkway is a cabinet with a door that is never fully opened.

Natural sits with almost anything, which is the practical argument for it: it does not commit the room to a colour scheme the way a painted finish does. Wood is the one material here that will not look identical to the photograph, because grain is not repeatable. It also means it takes a knock as a mark rather than a crack, and marks in wood age better than marks in paint. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly. Particle board is timber chips bonded under pressure. It is dimensionally stable and it keeps a large panel affordable, which is why it sits behind most flat-pack furniture rather than in front of it.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses. Look at how the doors are held shut. A magnetic catch is silent and forgiving; a latch is positive but announces itself every time.
