Description

A canvas wall art, 100cm tall, in green. At 100cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A piece like this sets the register of a room. Everything else can be quiet if one wall is not.

Natural sits with almost anything, which is the practical argument for it: it does not commit the room to a colour scheme the way a painted finish does. Jute is a coarse, matt fibre with a natural biscuit colour that dyes unevenly and looks better for it. It is strong under tension, which is why it has been made into rope for centuries. Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. Expanded polystyrene is used where a form needs to be large and weigh almost nothing. It gives the shape without the mass, which is what allows an oversized piece to hang or stand on a light fixing.

It hangs on a d-ring. Two D-rings hang from two hooks, which spreads the load and holds the piece square. Measure the distance between the rings and transfer it to the wall — a spirit level between the two marks does the rest.

Check the fixing before the frame: weight decides whether a picture hook will do or the wall needs a plug, and plasterboard needs an anchor whatever the weight.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
