Description

A shallow dish of clear glass, 20cm across, with a leaf pattern worked into the surface so the design reads in the glass itself rather than in any applied colour. Held over a lamp, the pattern picks up highlights and throws a faint tracery of shadow, while the clear body keeps the shade quiet and light when it is switched off. The saucer form is broad and low, so it spreads light outwards and downwards instead of hiding it.

This is a shade on its own, with no electrical parts, so it takes its lamp and its switching from the fitting it sits on. A golf ball lamp is the shape to use, up to 20W, and we would choose a warm white LED golf ball for the softest read through the glass. It suits a hallway, a landing, a small dining table or a spare bedroom, and it is one we suggest where a fabric shade would look too heavy for the room. Because the glass is clear, keep to a lamp you are happy to see.

The glass carries the pattern throughout rather than as a coating, so there is nothing on the surface to wear away with handling or cleaning. Dust settles quickly on clear glass, so give it a wipe when you dust the room: a dry microfibre cloth for the pattern, and a little glass cleaner on the cloth, never on the lamp or fitting, when fingermarks show. Let everything be cold before you lift the shade off, and support the rim with both hands rather than gripping one edge. It carries a one year warranty. Clear glass sits well with brass, matt black and aged nickel alike, which makes it an easy replacement for a tired shade on a pendant or a table lamp you already own. No lamp is supplied with it.
