Fire Rated IP65 Fixed Downlight - Chrome

This is a fixed recessed downlight rated IP65 and described by the manufacturer as fire rated, finished in chrome. The front is a round chrome bezel holding a clear lens, and behind it sits a black cylindrical housing with ventilation slots along its side. Two sprung steel clips fold up to grip the plasterboard once the fitting is pushed up into the ceiling. Fixed, rather than tilt, means the lens sits square in the bezel: the light goes straight down, and there is nothing to aim or re-adjust once the ceiling is made good.

The IP65 rating is the reason this one goes where water is about. The manufacturer states it is suitable for bathroom zones 3, 2 and 1, but not zone 0, which is the inside of the bath or the shower tray itself. In practice that covers a ceiling above a bath, a ceiling above a shower enclosure, and the rest of the room. It is equally at home in a kitchen, where steam and cooking splashes carry further than people expect, and in a utility room or a shower room whose ceiling also has to hold its fire resistance between floors.

Fire rated downlights exist because every hole cut into a ceiling takes something away from the fire resistance of the floor above, and a fire rated body is built to close that hole again as heat builds. The duration in minutes is not stated by the manufacturer, so if a specific figure has been asked for on site, check that first. The wattage, the lamp cap and the cut-out diameter are not stated either, so measure your existing holes and centres before committing to a run of them. Can I fit this above a shower or a bath?

Yes. The manufacturer states it suits bathroom zones 3, 2 and 1, which covers a ceiling above a shower enclosure or a bath, but not zone 0, the inside of the tray or tub.

Does it take a separate bulb, or is the LED built in?

The manufacturer does not state the light source or the lamp cap for this fitting, so please check with us before you buy if you need a particular lamp type.

What size hole does it need?

The cut-out diameter is not stated by the manufacturer. If you are replacing existing downlights, measure the holes you already have rather than assuming a common size.

Can it be dimmed?

Is it a tilt downlight?
