Description

A sideboard, 81cm tall, in black. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 160cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A sideboard is the one piece that stores a lot and still presents a surface, which is why it outlives most other furniture in a room. It works in a dining room, a hall or a living room equally.

Dark surfaces show dust and light surfaces show marks. Which is the easier problem depends entirely on the room, and dust is usually the easier one. Rattan is a climbing palm, steamed and bent rather than cut and joined, which is why the curves are continuous and the whole piece weighs so little. Every length differs slightly in colour, so no two pieces match exactly. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same.
