A console table, 76cm tall, in wood. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 120cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. It is also the most-looked-at surface in a house, because it sits at the point people arrive. What goes on it matters as much as the table.

The timber here is a veneer: a thin layer of the real wood, or a printed reproduction of it, laid over a stable board core. That is why the grain runs continuously across a panel this wide, which solid timber of the same width could not do without moving. The body is MDF under the finish, which is what keeps a piece this size affordable and dimensionally stable — MDF does not move with the seasons the way solid timber does. Supplied as a set of 1.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with.

Check the height against what sits behind it. Behind a sofa a console should match the back height or sit just below it. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
