Description

Elly the Elephant is a novelty door stop shaped as a sitting elephant, worked in a herringbone-patterned fabric that runs across her body in soft grey and beige tones. She sits upright with her trunk raised and her large ears spread wide, and the herringbone weave gives the whole piece a tweedy, textured surface that catches the light differently as you move around her. The ears, the tip of the trunk and the underside of her feet are made from a plainer, softer grey fabric, which sets off the patterned body and gives her a genuinely tactile, cuddly feel.

A door stop like this earns its place in a hallway, a bedroom, a nursery or a living room, anywhere a door swings shut on a draught or a breeze. She is weighted with sand rather than a light filling, so she has the heft to hold most internal doors open where a hollow stop would simply skid across the floor. Because she reads as a soft toy as much as a piece of hardware, she suits a child's room particularly well, and the muted grey palette sits happily against painted woodwork, natural flooring and neutral walls without shouting for attention.

The body is a polyester herringbone with a small proportion of wool in the blend, which is what gives the surface its wooliness and helps it shrug off the occasional knock or kick that a floor-level object collects. The filling is sand, packed heavily enough to keep her planted. If she picks up marks, spot clean only, working gently at the affected patch rather than soaking the fabric. She is one of a range of animal novelty stops, so if an elephant is not quite right there are other creatures in the same family to choose from.

Frequently Asked

What is inside the door stop that makes it heavy?

She is filled with sand, which is what gives her the weight to hold most internal doors open rather than sliding out of the way.

Will it hold a heavy door?

She is strong enough to hold most internal doors, though a very heavy or self-closing door may need something more substantial to stay put.

How do I clean it if it gets marked?

Spot clean only. Work gently at the mark with a damp cloth rather than soaking or immersing the fabric, as the sand filling should stay dry.

What is the fabric made of?

The body is a blend of ninety per cent polyester and ten per cent wool woven in a herringbone pattern, with softer plain fabric at the ears, trunk tip and feet.

Is it suitable for a child's room?

Its soft ears and cuddly feel make it a friendly fit for a nursery or child's bedroom, where it works as a doorstop and a bit of character both.
