Every home needs a spare screw-cap lamp in the cupboard, and this is the plain, useful sort. It follows the classic pear shape of the old household bulb, with a clear, unfrosted envelope and an E27 screw cap, so it drops into pendants, table lamps and standard lamps without fuss. The draw is 2W for about 250 lumens, and the colour is 4000K cool white: a crisper, whiter light than the yellowish warm white most people grew up with, without tipping over into blue. It is not dimmable, so put it on a plain switch rather than a dimmer plate.

This is a lamp for places where you want to see clearly rather than settle in, and for fittings where only a little light is needed: landings, box rooms, utility rooms, garages, cellar stairs, or a small task lamp over a workbench. The output is modest, so we reach for it in multi-lamp fittings where several caps share the work, or where a bare, bright pinpoint of light is the point. Behind opal glass or fabric it reads softer, while an open shade keeps it sharp and sparkling.

It is a small, light thing, and being clear rather than opal it shows dust and fingerprints sooner than a frosted lamp would. Switch off at the wall, give it a few minutes to lose its warmth, then wipe the outside with a dry cloth before screwing it back in; nothing damp, and no need to touch the contacts. It carries a five year warranty. We think of it as an everyday spare rather than something to show off, so it is worth keeping a couple in the drawer for the fittings you rarely think about. Where the lamp itself is on view in a bare holder, a shaped decorative bulb will flatter the fitting more.

What size is this bulb?

It measures 60mm across the widest part of the bulb and 106mm from the tip to the end of the cap, which is the standard A60 GLS size most pendants and table lamps are built around.

Will it fit a small screw fitting?

No. It has an E27 large screw cap only. Smaller candle and golf lamps usually take E14, and those two are not interchangeable.

Can I use it on a dimmer?

No, this one is non-dimmable. On a dimmer circuit it may flicker, buzz or fail early, so use it with an ordinary on-off switch.

How bright is it compared with an old bulb?

At 250 lumens it is a gentle light, closer to a very low wattage incandescent than to a main room lamp. For a single central pendant in a living room you would want something brighter.

Is 4000K warm or cool?

Cool white, a neutral and slightly crisp light rather than the amber tone of 2700K. It suits practical rooms and task lighting more than a snug sitting room.

How should I clean it?

Switch off, let it cool, then unscrew it and dust the clear surface with a dry cloth. Avoid sprays and damp cloths, and keep moisture away from the cap.
