Description
The Clarke is a single-light wall fitting with a polished nickel backplate, curved arm and white metal conical shade held in a chrome frame. An integrated pull-cord switch hangs from the lamp holder, allowing the light to be switched on and off without a wall switch, making it practical for bedside reading positions or hallway mirrors where the nearest wall switch may be several metres away.
Designed for bedrooms flanking a headboard, bathroom mirrors where task light is needed close to the face, or corridors where spaced wall lights provide wayfinding at night, the Clarke projects 222mm from the wall and casts focused downward light from a single E27 bulb. The conical shade narrows from 184mm at the base to concentrate light onto the area below, rather than spreading it across a wide arc. The polished nickel finish on the backplate and arm reflects ambient room light during the day, giving the fitting a presence even when switched off.
The white metal shade contrasts with the polished nickel hardware, creating a two-tone finish that pairs with both cool-toned interiors (greys, whites, chrome fixtures) and warmer schemes where the nickel adds a softer metallic accent than polished chrome. The shade is opaque metal rather than frosted glass, so all light output travels downward through the open base rather than diffusing through the sides. The pull-cord allows the light to be operated from standing or sitting positions without reaching for a wall switch, which is particularly useful when the fitting is mounted above a bedside table or washbasin.

Frequently Asked
What bulb does it take?
The Clarke takes a standard E27 (Edison screw) bulb up to 40W maximum. Bulbs are sold separately. Most users pair this with a warm-white LED bulb between 4-6W and 2700K-3000K for bedside reading.
How does the pull switch work?
The pull-cord hangs from the lamp holder below the shade. A gentle pull switches the light on, a second pull switches it off. This allows the light to be controlled from standing or sitting positions without needing a separate wall switch.
Can it be used in a bathroom?
The Clarke carries no IP rating in the specification, so it is suitable for bathrooms only in zones where no IP rating is required (typically Zone 3, more than 600mm from a bath or shower). Check current wiring regulations before installation in wet areas.
What mounting height works best for bedside reading?
For bedside reading the backplate is typically mounted 1.2-1.5m above floor level, which places the light 400-700mm above a standard mattress height. This allows the downward-directed light to fall onto a book or tablet held in a sitting position.
