Description

A ginger jar, 35cm tall, in black. At 19cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. An empty vase is still doing something if the form is right, and that is the test to apply before buying: if it only works filled, it is a container rather than a piece. Most vases spend more of the year empty than full.

A dark finish reads as a shape rather than a surface, so the outline does the work and the detail recedes. Against a pale wall that is graphic; against a dark one the piece almost disappears. The lid is what separates storage from display. Closed, the contents stop being part of the room; open, it is a container like any other, so the question is where the lid goes while you are using it. Fired ceramic is hard, wipeable and heavy enough not to travel when it is knocked. It will chip rather than dent, so it belongs somewhere it is not being caught by a sleeve.

At 3kg it is heavy enough to stand on the floor without being knocked over by a passing foot.

Buy the silhouette, not the capacity, and check the opening against the stems you actually bring home rather than the ones in the photograph. A narrow neck holds a few stems upright without any support; a wide one needs a full arrangement to look deliberate.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
