Three E27 lamps sit behind a frosted acrylic diffuser at the foot of this pendant, so the light arrives soft rather than sharp. The drum shade measures 40cm across, made up in taupe faux silk with a halo gold lining that casts warmth over everything passing through it. Ceiling plate, rods and lampholders are finished in satin nickel, a low-shine grey that stays quietly in the background.

We hang shades of this width over a dining table, in a hallway with height to spare, or in a sitting room where one ceiling point has to carry the whole room. It will drop as far as 3.3m, so a stairwell or a tall landing is well within its reach, and it can sit far closer to the ceiling in a bedroom. With the right lamps and a compatible dimmer it can be dimmed, which helps in a kitchen diner that shifts from breakfast to late supper. It suits a room that wants some presence overhead without hard edges or glare.

The shade is a dual faux silk, taupe on the outer face and halo gold within, while the acrylic diffuser below gathers the light into one even glow. Keep the fabric fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery head of a vacuum on its lowest setting; the diffuser and the nickel want nothing more than a barely damp cloth and a dry one after, with the power off first. What lamps does it take, and what is the maximum wattage?

It takes three E27 lamps, with 20W the ceiling for each. An LED GLS A60 is the sensible choice and the one we would fit.

How far down will it hang?

The drop runs from 390mm at its shortest to 3310mm at full extension, so it works both in a standard room and down a stairwell.

How big is the shade?

The drum is 400mm in diameter and 180mm deep, with a total body height of 355mm.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you use dimmable lamps and a dimmer matched to them. No dimmer is supplied with the pendant.

What is the diffuser made from, and can I clean it?

It is frosted acrylic. Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away; avoid solvents and abrasive creams, which will haze the surface.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and sitting rooms.
