Description

A broad, shallow drum of nude beige faux silk sits on a matt black multi arm frame, with five candle lamps held inside it so the light is shared across the whole width of the fabric rather than pooling in one place. At 60cm across, it reads as wide and low rather than tall, and the inner face is finished in moonlight, which lends a soft warmth to the light coming down through it. The metal is matt throughout, with no polish anywhere to catch a reflection.

It is happiest over a dining table, where the width sits comfortably across a long top, and it works just as well as the main light in a sitting room or above a wide landing. The drop adjusts, so it can hang low over a table or be drawn up closer for a busier room. We fit LED candle lamps here, E14 and no more than 20W each, and a warm colour temperature suits the beige fabric far better than a cold white. If you want the light on a dimmer, choose lamps rated for dimming.

The shade is faux silk, so treat it gently: a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting will lift dust from the outer face, and the matt black metal only wants a dry cloth. Nothing damp, and no sprays near the fabric. Keep it to rooms that stay dry, so a hall, a bedroom or a dining room rather than a shower room. It carries a one year warranty. Against a pale wall the beige nearly disappears and the black frame does all the drawing; against a deeper colour the shade lifts and glows instead, which is worth thinking about before you decide where it goes.
