Description

A wide drum shade in black faux silk sits at the centre of this piece, carried on a polished chrome suspension and chain. Five candle lampholders are set within the shade on shallow arms, so the light is shared across the width rather than pooling from a single point. The shade measures 60cm across, which gives it real presence over a table, and its inner face is white so light is thrown back down onto the surface below. The drop can be set short for a low ceiling or let out for a stairwell.

This is a fitting we reach for over a dining table or a kitchen island, where a broad shade balances the length of the furniture below. It also works in a wide hallway or a generous bedroom, hung a little higher. We would fit LED candle lamps, up to 20W each; the fitting will dim if you choose dimmable lamps and pair them with a suitable dimmer, though neither the lamps nor the dimmer come with it. It suits dry rooms indoors, away from splashes and steam.

The frame and cup are polished chrome with a bright mirrored surface, and the shade is a laminated faux silk with a crisp seam and a clean lower edge. It is an earthed fitting. For upkeep, run a soft brush over the fabric now and then and buff the chrome with a dry cloth once the power is off and the lamps have gone cold; avoid sprays, which mark laminate. It carries a one year warranty. Black with chrome keeps company easily with dark timber, marble and warm brass elsewhere in a room, and the white lining stops the shade reading heavy.
