Five slim arms rise from a central satin nickel column and curve up inside a faux silk drum, so the lamps stay hidden and the light that reaches the room is soft and wide. The shade measures 60cm across, black on the outside, with a white laminate lining that pushes light downward onto whatever sits beneath it. Suspension is by chain, so the drop can be set to suit the room it hangs in. Each arm carries an E14 candle fitting, and we would reach for LED candles, up to 20W apiece, for the least heat inside the shade.

A shade of this width wants space around it, so we point customers towards it for dining tables, a kitchen island, or a long console in a broad hall. Hung a little above eye level over a table it reads as one calm band of light rather than a row of separate points. The fitting will dim if you choose dimmable candles and pair them with a suitable dimmer, worth doing where the same room takes homework early and supper later. It also works well on a generous landing, filling the space without dropping too far into it.

The arms and column are metal in a satin nickel finish, quiet enough to sit beside chrome taps or brushed handles without clashing, while the drum holds its shape on a rigid laminate backing. Dust the shade with a soft brush or a lint roller, working around the drum rather than across it, and keep water and sprays away from the fabric; the metalwork needs no more than a dry cloth once the power is off and the lamps have gone cold. Keep it to dry indoor rooms. It carries a one year warranty. Lamps are not included.

How far down does it hang?

The drop can be set between 340mm and 1800mm, with the body of the fitting itself standing 220mm tall beneath the shade line.

What lamps should I buy for it?

Five small candle lamps with E14 screw fittings, rated no higher than 20W each. LED candles are our usual choice here, as they keep the inside of the shade cool.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and use them with a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer come with it.

What is the shade made of?

A faux silk outer in black over a laminate structure, with a white lining on the inside face to reflect light down.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20, which suits living rooms, dining rooms, halls and bedrooms rather than wet or steamy spaces.

The shade is 600mm in diameter and 150mm deep, and the whole fitting weighs 2.5kg.
