Frequently Asked

How do you wire a 2-way light switch?

A 2-way switch lets one light be controlled from two positions; the two switches are linked by strapping wires between their L1 and L2 terminals with the common terminals taking the feed and switch line. Installation should be carried out by a competent person in accordance with BS 7671.

What is the difference between 1-way and 2-way switches?

A 1-way switch controls a light from a single position; a 2-way switch allows control from two positions, such as the top and bottom of a staircase. A 2-way switch can be used in a 1-way circuit.

What does DP mean on a switch?

DP stands for double pole — the switch breaks both the live and neutral conductors when off, fully isolating the connected appliance. It is used on higher-load and appliance circuits.

Can I replace a single switch with a double switch?

Yes, provided the back box is wide enough for the larger plate and the wiring supports the additional gang. Installation should be carried out by a competent person in accordance with BS 7671.
