Description

Two data ports sit behind a flat screwless plate in piano black, a high gloss finish that catches the light with no visible fixings to interrupt it. The plate measures 88mm square, so it keeps to the same footprint as a standard single plate and lines up tidily with the other wall furniture in a room. Each port takes wired Ethernet, giving a desk, a television or a games console its own hard connection rather than asking it to share the air with everything else in the house.

We would fit this at a home office desk, in a media wall behind the television, or at the point where a router lands and needs to feed more than one room. It suits anyone who has grown tired of a wi-fi signal dropping at the worst moment, and it is one we suggest for studies, spare bedrooms pressed into service as offices, and loft conversions where cable is going in anyway. Because it carries low voltage data rather than mains power, it belongs in dry indoor rooms and is wired as part of a data circuit.

The moulded ABS plate is light in the hand and holds its gloss well, and the shallow depth behind keeps the whole assembly compact. Fingerprints do show on black gloss, so we keep a dry microfibre cloth to hand and buff the face now and then, leaving the ports themselves alone and well away from any cleaning spray. It carries a ten year warranty. We like it best in rooms where the switches and power points are already dark: against a pale wall the black reads as deliberate punctuation, and it does the same quiet job as a white plate without vanishing into the paint.
