Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate toggle switch provides the middle switching point in three-switch circuits, allowing a single light or lighting group to be controlled from three separate wall locations. The switch features an antique brass square-edge metal faceplate with a matching metal toggle mechanism that clicks up and down for on/off control.
Designed for stairwells, landings, long hallways and open-plan spaces where light control is needed from more than two positions, the intermediate switch sits between two 2-way switches to complete the circuit. The 10AX rating handles lighting loads up to 2,300W on a 230V circuit, covering typical domestic and light commercial installations. The 16mm minimum back box depth requirement makes it compatible with shallow mounting boxes in stud walls and plasterboard partitions.
The antique brass finish is applied to premium-grade steel and shows the subtle surface variation characteristic of aged brass, with darker tones in the recesses and lighter highlights on the raised edges. The square edge profile sits flush with the wall without a bevelled surround, giving clean lines that suit traditional, heritage and transitional interiors. The built-in gasket behind the faceplate provides IP20 environmental protection and the terminals accept screw fixing for standard lighting cable.

Frequently Asked
What is an intermediate switch and when is it needed?
An intermediate switch is the middle switching point in a three-switch circuit, sitting between two 2-way switches. It's needed when you want to control a light from three separate locations, such as in a stairwell with switches on the ground floor, landing and upper floor, or in a long hallway with entry points at both ends and the middle.
What back box depth is required?
A minimum 16mm mounting box depth is needed. This shallow requirement makes the switch compatible with standard UK plasterboard back boxes and stud wall installations where deeper boxes cannot be recessed.
What does the 10AX rating mean?
The 10AX rating indicates the switch can handle up to 10 amps on a lighting circuit, which equates to approximately 2,300W at 230V. This covers typical domestic and light commercial lighting loads without requiring a higher-rated switch.
What other finishes are available in this range?
Knightsbridge produces this square edge toggle switch design in a range of metal finishes including polished brass, brushed chrome, polished chrome, antique brass, satin brass and matt black. Use the search function to find other variants in stock at Niori.
